Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family and ranges in color from a faint light blue to blue to bluish-green. Aquamarine is named for the Latin phrase "water of the sea" due to its spectrum of blue and bluish-green hues. Its color is attributed to small amounts of iron within the mineral and is generally found in geological cavities, mostly in granite.
Aquamarine is found in many parts of the world including North America, South America, Russia, India, Madagascar and Africa. Those found in China and Colombia tends to have a yellowish tint. Its light blue arouses feelings of sympathy, trust, harmony and friendship. The blue of aquamarine is a divine color, because it is the color of the sky. Aquamarine blue is also the color of water with its lucid blue tones of the oceans and its life-giving force.
Since early times, aquamarine has been believed to endow the wearer with foresight, courage, and happiness. As a healing stone, it is said to be effective as a treatment for anxiety and in the Middle Ages it was thought that aquamarine would reduce the effect of poisons. A legend says that sailors wore aquamarine gemstones to keep them safe and prevent seasickness.
